Endorphins are brain chemicals, neurotransmitters, classified as “endogenous opioid polypeptides” produced by the pituitary gland and the brain during exercise to respond to pain, exertion, and stress. They act as natural pain relievers and resulting in a euphoric feeling. Not a bad way to combat stress and fatigue.
During prolonged exercise the production of endorphins lead to regulation of appetite, discharge of sex hormones, and the improvement of immune response. Like a fingerprint, two people might not enjoy the same release of endorphins with the same exercise. You have to find what works for you.
Endorphins can also be secreted by eating certain foods like chocolate or chili peppers upon digestion, which may explain why people crave chocolate in a moment of weakness or stress. Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed sign up for a Kickboxing class or 30/30 instead of reaching for the Hershey bar.
