  1. Unrealistic Goals. The biggest mistake that people make is in setting unrealistic goals for their progress. Not everyone’s body is the same, so there is no textbook answer for how things have to progress. While you may start seeing changes in your body, you are not going to achieve perfect results overnight. Rome was not built in a day, and you will most likely not be able to get your body optimally fit in a day. Barre workouts are designed to work over time.
  2. Moving too Fast. Beginners typically want to jump right in with advanced Barre devotees as soon as they hit the gym. This is a really big mistake. How long have you been at HIP Studio?

How and when did you discover Barre?

I LOVE to workout & try new classes. About 10 yrs. ago I took a Bar Method class back when there were only 2 Bar studios around, the Bar Method on Sawtelle & the one in West Hollywood, if you can imagine that! I didn't fall in LOVE with it after my 1st or even 2nd class. It was when I went home to Michigan to visit my family, that I got hooked. I saw that there was a Pilates/Barre studio by my sisters house and since everyone was working I decided to check it out. I ended up going 2x's a day for the week that I was there! It was a little different then the Bar Method, faster paced, the teachers were great and the music was a lot of fun! I think I went home to visit so many times that year just to go to the classes! ( don't mention that to the family) I got to know the co-creators of the class & we kept in touch because I wanted to bring the workout to the Southbay. They ended up going their seperate ways. Tonya Becker is co-owner of Physique 57 and Carrie Rezabek Dorr is the founder of Pure Barre. So I learned from the best in the business! Back in California I ended going back to Bar Method and became a regular. I also started giving some of the exercises to my pilates clients and they loved it. What is it about Barre that you love?

I love the barre workout because it changed my body like no other workout has! If they had rooms to rent at the gym, I would have lived there! I taught spinning, aerobics, was a personal trainer, cardio queen, runner but never liked the way my legs/butt looked. After taking barre classes along with my Pilates workouts my body transformed and I haven't stepped into the gym for about 8years. Tell us about your class? How do you incorporate your personality into your classes?

I love teaching Barre! I love music & to sing! (sorry gang,can't help myself) My class moves fast and has a lot of thigh and seat work in it. I love to make you feel your legs like no other workout you've done. We start with arms then move on to thigh work...& more thigh work. Then stretch to lengthen the muscles we just worked, which is one of the secrets to changing the shape of your thighs. Glute or seat work then abs. another stretch and you are done and walking out with a little quiver to your step. What makes your class different than Barre classes taught by other trainers at HIP Studio?

What's great about ALL the classes at HIP is that we all teach a little differently so the clients can never say they got bored from the classes at the studio.

I am a stickler when it comes to form. I want everyone to leave the class feeling better than when they walked through the door. What are common mistakes made by students or beginners in Barre classes?

During the seat work it's important to make the movement small and use the glutes and hamstrings to do the movements as opposed to throwing the leg up with your back or momentum.

Take a break if you can't "squeeze" one more time-but not too long! Then come back into the position. Do you have any tips for your students on how to make the most of their Barre class?

Have fun! Challenge yourself! Take yourself to your edge. Go a little deeper in thigh work. Tell yourself it's only 3-4 minutes long, I CAN DO THIS! There's nothing like "the barre shake". You will HATE IT but LOVE IT and look for it every time you come to barre and do the thigh work.

How long have you been at HIP Studio?

Over a year! How and when did you discover Barre?

I discovered barre 7 years ago when I moved to LA. There was a Cardio Barre down the street from me. My roommate and I, both former dancers, became obsessed with the class, we called it "hyper ballet." My body was in it's best shape when I was taking 3 ballet classes a week (granted, I was 19). Barre class offered me that same ballet body in half the time without some Prima Ballet teacher barking at me to get my leg higher. Even after I moved to Venice I still drove well out of my way in LA traffic to take class whenever I could. Just last year I picked up a different barre class and started teaching at Pop Physique in West LA which focuses on the Lotte Berk Method like Bar Method. What is it about Barre that you love?

Barre whips my body into shape faster than any other class. There were plenty of stints in my producing career when I fell out of my workout routine, but a month of regular barre classes and I was back. Tell us about your class

My Barre class is a fusion of the "hyper ballet" I grew to love at Cardio Barre with the Lotte Berk thigh shaking, arm burning, seat clenching which is signature of barre classes. I start with a warm up with abs and arms and then we head to the barre for thigh work followed by a low impact cardio series to get the heart rate up. Then we go back to the mat for Pilates abs and glutes.

I always make sure to vary it up from week to week. Being too repetitive is my one pet peeves when taking classes at other Barre Studios. I make it a priority to choose from a wide array of exercises, mixing new ones in with old faithfuls.

How do you incorporate your personality into your classes?

It's fast paced, I crack jokes about buns and thighs and I always try to incorporate some 80s music. Also, I love feedback! I love when clients tell me what exercise they loved or were sore from the next day. Or the one they hated and made them feel uncomfortable. I'll make sure to deliver what you like if you tell me about it. I'm a people pleaser that way. What makes your class different than Barre classes taught by other trainers at HIP Studio?

At the barre you can expect a little more cardio in my class. You'll still get the shaking, make-it-stop portion, but not for as long. What are common mistakes made by students or beginners in Barre classes?

Beginners often have trouble stacking their shoulders over their hips. I like to use the imagery of being in a toaster. If you stick your rear back or your chest forward you aren't going to get toasty, you're going to get burned. We want to be toasty. Once the shoulders and the hips are stacked all the other joints can align easily. Do you have any tips for your students on how to make the most of their Barre class?

Listen and watch! Don't check out because we are pulsing for a while and it hurts. Check the mirror to see if your form looks like my form and keep your ears open for cues to transition exercises. Just like in Pilates, you will receive the full benefits of your workout by connecting your mind to your body.

Do This in Your Barre Classes for Extra Burn

barre classes Everyone wants to know how to get the most out of their workouts. There is a lot more to all around fitness than just working out, but there tend to be a few things that you can do to help feel that extra burn. If you regularly take barre classes at HIP Studio, you know we work you until you shake! Here is how you can go the extra mile, burn more calories and develop more lean muscle. Here are a few ideas on what you can do at the barre to help reach that burning point.

Tighten your abs as you go through each move. It might seem like such a simple thing, but if you are not tightening your abs while you are working out, then you are not likely to achieve the burn you want. Tightening your abs forces your body to work a little bit harder. Your muscles are working harder, and thus you are helping them to grow stronger. Throughout your entire workout, you should try to pull your abs in.

Work to increase your heart rate during your routine. Again, this might seem like a no-brainer, but some people think that if their heart rate is down and they aren’t breathing hard, they are still getting a good workout. Even if your workout seems simple, you should be working hard on flexing your muscles and doing the moves so that your heart rate is increasing. If your heart rate isn’t elevated during your workout, you’re not likely to feel the burn.

Increase your weights where possible. Barre classes are usually about building lean muscle, tone, and flexibility. The weights or medicine balls that you use will be very light, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t increase them a little bit. Increasing your weights will help your muscles to work harder, and you are more likely to find the burn by upping your weights once in a while.

Move out of your comfort zone to more advanced moves. If you are still doing beginner moves and you cannot feel the burn any longer, it might be time to move on to something more advanced. Your instructor will likely be able to show you how to modify your barre moves to a new level. This should sufficiently challenge you enough for a while to feel the burn all over your body.

Step up the pace. If you are working out at home, you might be able to adjust the pace of your exercises.  You might be surprised at the burn you can achieve by simply changing the rate at which you complete certain parts of your routine.

Barre classes are great for building on your flexibility, lean muscle, and tone. If you are struggling to find that burn that you want during your routine, you might try some of the suggestions listed above. You should also be able to talk with your instructor about how to better get to that burning point during your workout. Above all, be safe with your adjustments to your routine so that you don’t end up hurting yourself. After all, barre is supposed to help you improve your body in a fun way.

Barre Classes: 4 Myths, Busted!

1) Barre Classes Are Just For Dancers, FALSE! I’m sure you walked in to your first Barre class and thought, oh boy, look at all of these dancers. What am I doing here? Well guess what? They aren’t dancers, they just look like them! And you are about to! Yes, the Barre workout was developed by a German ballet dancer who combined her ballet Barre workout with rehab exercises after a back injury but that doesn’t mean that you have to be a dancer in order to look and feel like one!

2) Barre Classes Are Just for Women. NOPE, Meet Eric!

Everyone, meet Eric! Eric is a very healthy, handsome, successful man living in Hermosa Beach. Eric also happens to be a Barre student and was willing to answer a few questions for us.

HIP: Eric, why did you decide to take Barre classes?

Eric: I Decided to try the classes with my buddies because a few of our girlfriends who were going convinced us to go and were swearing by the workout. (Of course they also mentioned that a lot of the girls taking the class were quite attractive, and that did not hurt!)

HIP: Tell us about your experience . . .

Eric: My experience was really positive.  It is a great leg and core workout and I was always pretty spent after an hour session.  The ab-exercises were really great and I enjoyed the short meditation session at the end of the class to cool off and clear my head.  My legs and core felt really strong by the end the time I went to the classes and it was great for surfing and volleyball!  I think my shoulders got moderately stronger from the light-weight exercises they had us doing, but I didn't witness an increase in size.

HIP: How frequently do you take Barre?

Eric: The first month, I took the classes 2-3x/week.  After that I tapered off to 1-2X/week and maybe only a few times/month towards the end of the period when I was working out there.

HIP: Were you often the only male in Barre classes?

Eric: No, I was never the only male there.  The first month we had a solid group of 4-5 guys going, but that tapered as time went on.  There was always 2-3 other guys there when I went, regardless if they were people I knew or not.

3) Barre Classes Don’t Make You Sweat, WRONG! Bring A Towel.

The main original fundamentals of Barre workouts are small deep muscular movements done repetitively working specific muscle groups to near failure. Extra special focus and control is paid to the legs, butt and abs. Stretching sequences are commonly included throughout this intense workout. If that doesn’t make you sweat, then we don’t know what will! Be sure to bring a towel to your next Barre Class.

4) Barre Is Not Cardio. NO, It’s Better!  

A cardio workout is one that uses a wide variety of muscles. It requires a pulse goal of 65 to 85% above each individual’s regular resting pulse. Take your pulse in the morning before arising from bed. Count it for 60 seconds. Normal Resting Pulse Rates range from 60 to 100 beats per min. However, they vary person to person and may be higher or lower depending on your overall health and workout habits.

During a 50 minute Barre Class at HIP Studio your heart rate will go up and down while working your muscles to ultimate failure. We like to call this “the shake” don’t be embarrassed when you get “the shake” this just means that you are doing everything right! Not only are you increasing your heart rate and burning fat in those problem areas, you will also experience what we like to call “the after burn” where you are burning calories well after your workout. Something traditional cardio like running doesn’t provide.

The class warms up before increasing intensity with absolutely zero impact. Most exercises target a specific muscle group with a tiny movement. The added challenge is to maintain body placement while working the targeted muscle. You’ll stay the barre for legs, glutes, and a light cardio portion, using your own body weight. Some exercises utilize a playground ball while others step away from the barre to incorporate light weights for upper body sculpting. The class typically ends on the floor with Pilates inspired abs, inner and outer thighs, before finishing with a much-deserved stretch.

Don’t be intimidated…

It’s definitely NOT a dancer’s only club. The instructor keeps the energy going and motivation up while giving helpful corrections and noting targeted muscles to insure proper execution.
